COMPETITION ELUSIVE FOR KROONA

February 2nd, 2003

ROSEVILLE, Minn. -- Very rarely does an FVWBL event take place that doesn't see start-to-finish competition. Friday night's off-season event was the rare exception.

Mike Kroona put his Griffey Baseball skills on display to prove, for the second time in the 2002-2003 off-season, that he is the best Griffey player in the league.

The tournament opened with Mike's San Francisco Giants hammering Judd's L.A. Dodgers 7-1. Mike scored early and often while Judd never put up any kind of fight.

The Flaherty brothers met in game two and it was Jake's Twins who got out to the early 2-0 lead. Adam quickly rebounded, leading his Blue Jays to 24 unanswered runs and a victory by the score of 24-2.

Jake's misfortune continued in the 1st loser's bracket game when his Twins fell 22-2 to Judd's Dodgers despite an early home run by Ugly which tied the game at 2.

Adam's Blue Jays couldn't keep the offense up as Mike shut Adam out, winning 5-0. It was the first time in recorded history that a team scored 24 runs in one game, and were shutout in the next.

Adam didn't stay down for long, however, as he quickly dispatched Judd and the Dodgers from the tournament by a score of 12-4 to advance to the championship. They would have to beat Mike's club twice to win the tournament.

It wasn't to be. Mike continued his dominance rallying from a 6-4 deficit to tie the game at 7 and go on to win the game 14-9 and win his second Griffey title of the off-season in as many tries.

"Mike's just too good," said Flaherty, who suffered both of his defeats at the hands of Mike's Giants.

Jake Calls Part of Championship Game
Jake Flaherty called a portion of the champoinship game Saturday evening. In a sometimes lackluster broadcast, Jake spoke about brother Adam and his video game conspiracy theory. The two Flaherty's also performed a post-tournament national anthem which can be heard during the broadcast.

Mike Calls for Bowling
After the championship game, but prior to forgetting his own name at sign-off, Mike Kroona called for the next FVWBL off-season event to be bowling. FVWBL members have bowled together in the last few months, but it has never been touted as an official FVWBL event.

City Council Meeting Amusing
The four FVWBL members in attendance Saturday night were treated to an amusing dissertation by Roseville's Mayor, John Kysylyczyn, on why the Roseville Police Department doesn't need the ATV's they desire. The FVWBL members spoke about possible plans to attend one of the entertaining meetings.

Tournament Almost Tainted
Jake Flaherty reneged on his initial choice for his Griffey team causing the tournament to be played under protest. Later, he chose Atlanta's Fulton County stadium as the home for his game with brother, Adam, even though neither of the participating teams was Atlanta. After all of that was settled, Jake pulled out one more such act. He decided that he needed to get the loser's bracket game out of the way in the wrong order. Game 4 on the tournament bracket was actually played before game 3. It is unclear as to whether Frank Viola will rule on this issue.

Adam celebrated a big hit versus Mike... ...but his celebration didn't last long

Mike had a full touchdown lead on Adam (and don't forget the extra point). Jake, weary and worn, broadcasts the championship game.
