JUDD CAPTURES TWO PING PONG TITLES

Sunday, November 3rd

ROSEVILLE, MINN. -- Hours ago the first off-season FVWBL Ping Pong tournaments ended with Judd emerging as the champion in each.

Much talk had been made on the FVWBL Discussion Board in the last two weeks about the great Shi Shi Ni.  It was apparent that ping pong talent in the FVWBL is abundant.

"I went in thinking I had the tournament in the bag," Judd admitted later.  "I wasn't prepared for the challenge that Mike and Adam (Shi Shi Ni) were going to bring to the ping pong table."

That comment wasn't out of a lack of respect for Dave or Jake -- Judd never saw the opportunity fo face either of them.

Judd captured the first tournament with three straight victories, including an first round win over Mike and two straight victories over Adam (one in the winners' bracket and then in the first championship game).  Both Adam v. Judd matches in tournament one went the full three games and in the first championship game Adam had Judd down a game and 13-5 before Judd stormed back for the title.

With the Tournament I victory, Judd earned a bye in the second tournament.

Mike opened the tournament with a stunning victory over Dave coming from one game down.  Adam beat brother, Jake for the second time in as many tries and moved on to face Judd.  Judd took that match in three games, once again, and then met a determined Mike in the winners' bracket final.  After Judd took game one, Mike took the second game 26-24 in what was probably his best game of ping-pong of the evening.  Judd went on to take game three, however, and moved to the championship for the second time of the evening.

The losers' bracket saw Dave take Jake out in the first round.  Dave then lost to Adam in one of the better matches of the evening.  Mike took game one of the losers' bracket final, but Adam won the next two to reach his second championship game in as many attempts.

Judd looked like he had the second tournament in control when he took the first game 21-15.  Adam stormed back however, and took a 20-3 lead.  Judd fought back to 20-9, but it was as close as he'd get.  The championship game came down to a third game.

The third game was a tight one.  The intensity had died as it was nearing 2:30 a.m., but it was a battle to the end.  Judd held Adam's late charge at bay and took the third and decisive game 21-18 acquiring his second championship of the evening.

"I don't know if I'll ever have a ping pong evening like that again," Judd said.  "I was fortunate and got the breaks on many occassions -- especially against Mike and Adam."

Perhaps Judd forgot that those were the only two opponents Judd faced, but the ball did seem to be bouncing his way.
