CROWD BEATS THE ODDS
May 30th, 2003

ROSEVILLE, Minn. -- In many cases three has been too much of a crowd to overcome in winning a Frank Viola Wiffle Ball League tournament, but on Memorial Day afternoon Katie, Greg and Adam proved that a crowd can win when pitted against the pairs. They also

proved they could win the hard way - through the losers' bracket.

Monday's tournament opened with Katie, Greg and Adam taking on Jackie and Mike. Katie, looking for her first victory of the season, fell victim to the first female home run of the season - Jackie's towering blast that landed on the upper roof, above the deck. She later added an RBI double that nearly left the yard for the second female home run of the season helping her and Mike to a 3-1 victory over Katie, Greg and Adam.

Game two saw Jackie and Mike continue on a roll against Shelly and Judd. Mike provided the offense in this one with a solo shot off of the right field roof and they advanced to the championship with the 1-0 victory.

The first losers' bracket game saw Shelly and Judd's offensive woes continue as they fell to Katie, Greg and Adam by a 3-1 deficit. That win marked Katie's first victory of the season.

Katie's second win of the season came in the first championship game against Jackie and Mike. Katie, Greg and Adam put together the two necessary runs with the combination of

hot hitting from Katie and Greg to go with Adam's one-handed, tennis-style swing. The 2-1 victory for Katie, Greg and Adam forced the "if game" to decide the tournament.

Fittingly, the championship game was the best game of the tournament. Scoreless through the regulation six innings, Katie, Greg and Adam finally punched one across in the seventh to give them a 1-0 victory and the tournament victory.
Further wiffle action hasn't yet been scheduled.
